One of the visitors from Experiencing Guha left us with an impression that made us see this space differently: “Every corner here reveals a new layer, like walking through a Ghibli film.”
The architecture in Studio Ghibli films carries principles worth learning from. Hayao Miyazaki designed the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka with the motto, “Let’s get lost together,” without a fixed route. The building feels warm, open to wind and light, and filled with traces of life. He also embraces “ma,” a pause that allows an experience to breathe. So, being “like Ghibli” is not about its visual style, but about a space that is layered, invites you to get lost, and feels alive. We care for materials that carry the traces of craftsmen’s hands with the same belief.
That afternoon, there were two groups. The first was Kak @ar.vinpangilinan and @giannepaula, architects from the Philippines visiting several architecture firms in Indonesia. The second was an Indonesian family, a father @hendy.pku, mother @lisaahusen, child, and grandmother, who wandered through Guha’s corridors.
At first, Kak Arvin requested an English tour, but then changed his mind. “Let’s use Indonesian so the other group can enjoy the afternoon too.” The guests who came from the farthest away were the first to make room for others.
Arvin told us about his giant Sulcata tortoise, a gift from a client. We smiled because some of Guha’s four-legged residents were also gifts from clients. Two countries, the same story. Before leaving, Arvin bought two books, asked for them to be signed, and promised to send a book from his library for our shelves. They sent the book to us the very next day.
Another surprise came from the second group. The father, Om Hendy, turned out to be an old friend of ours from university. A small reunion took place on Guha’s mezzanine, accompanied by a table full of homemade food, because an afternoon tour is bound to make you hungry.
It was a warm afternoon, filled with curiosity and an old friendship reunited. And once again, we were reminded that kindness will always bring more good things along with it.
