On February 21-22, we had the opportunity to welcome friends from @yamadamidori_lab @araki.lab and @nakatani_lab. Midori Yamada, Akiko Okabe, Mika Araki, Naohiko Hino, Chimaru Ikeda, Beatrice Sonia Ferlisan, Rei Takahashi, Takumi Tanabe, and Mone Kitazato conduct a research study across several sites in Indonesia, including @guhapiyandeling @guhatheguild and @guhaboboto.
This visit became a meaningful space for knowledge exchange. They arrived with a strong sense of curiosity, seeking to understand how architectural practice unfolds in Indonesia—not only through its final outcomes, but also through the processes behind them.
At Piyandeling, conversations ranged from building processes and techniques to the relationships embedded within them, including exchanges with craftsmen alongside Pak Sani’in. Meanwhile, at Guha the Guild, they engaged with explanations on space and concept shared by Kak Rich, before continuing the journey to Guha Boboto. Questions emerged around the relationships between space, family, craftsmen, and the surrounding context, including how OMAH Library and Guha came to exist.
Throughout the experience, they observed with great attention to detail. Questions surfaced around materials, joint systems, craftsmanship, and how space can grow over time. They did not simply observe, but made a genuine effort to understand.
At the end, they shared reflections on the richness of detail, the strength of an evolving architectural concept, and a deep respect for process and craftsmanship. They recognized how materials such as bamboo can form structures that are both strong and beautiful, how joint systems become integral to design, and how open spaces foster close relationships with nature.
Thank you for your presence and for the exchange shared over these two days. May each conversation and observation continue to grow as part of an ongoing journey—both here and wherever it may lead next.
