LANAI is an independent Malaysian ‘archi-cultural’ zine produced by an informal collaborative collective which operates as a non-profit. LANAI aims to add to the discourse around design and architecture in Malaysia by collating pieces of thoughts and provocations centered around specific themes, presenting it as a way to think about the world and inform our everyday practice.
How it Started
“Besides building and design, how else can you use your architectural skills? We made a zine.
Since its inception, LANAI has always been collective by design. It started with #late-night-gossips, where secrets and frustrations were shared. In those lonely lockdown days, we found comfort and solidarity in each other. We realised that we are motivated by a common love-hate relationship with architecture. We admire the practice, but we are also unapologetically critical about its shortcomings and how it can be better. We wanted to turn our words into action and work together towards a common objective. We started to do this by creating zines.”
